interrogativity in Rioplatense Spanish

Rioplatense Spanish marks a clause as a question by intonation, by a question word, and in writing by paired marks, and never by an affix or particle on the verb.

Rioplatense Spanish leaves the statement unmarked and marks the question without a dedicated form. A question expecting yes or no differs from the corresponding statement in nothing but delivery: the same string of words is distinguished in speech by a rising contour and in writing by the paired marks that open and close the clause. A question with content is introduced by a question word such as qué, quién, dónde or cómo, which carries a stress the corresponding relative pronoun lacks and is written with an accent for that reason. Placing the verb before its subject is available and is not required, and the variety readily allows a subject pronoun before the verb, as in qué querés vos. The realizers are an intonational process and a set of frames rather than any form of the verb, which is what the periphrastic state records; the value is obligatory because a question is never left unmarked, while the statement, as the dimension predicts, is never marked at all.
