- Gloss
- The cardinal for a count of twenty one, which inherits both the gender inflection and the shortening of the unit inside it.
This compound is the only one in the whole range that inflects, and it inflects because the unit inside it does. It carries a written accent on its last syllable and shortens before a masculine noun exactly as the bare unit does, so the inflection of the simple word is visible inside a word that is otherwise a single stored spelling. The feminine shape does not shorten, which reproduces the same asymmetry the unit shows.
Paradigm
Non-finite forms (no person, so no coordinate in the five-column grid):
- veintiunaThe feminine shape of the cardinal for twenty one, used both before its noun and on its own.
- veintiunoThe masculine shape of the cardinal for twenty one, used when no noun follows it.
- veintiúnThe shortened masculine shape of the cardinal for twenty one, used immediately before the masculine noun it counts.
