determinación

The role inside a nominal phrase held by the element that settles whether what the phrase names is being presented as identifiable, and how much of it is being named.

Determination is the clearest case in the graph of a role and a class being two different objects that share a name in ordinary usage. The class is a set of words; this role is a position those words occupy, and the two come apart in both directions. A word of the class can appear outside the role, standing alone in place of a whole phrase, and the role can be filled by nothing while still contributing a reading, since a phrase with an empty slot in front of its head is understood as saying something the same phrase with a determiner would not. The role is where the identifiability of what the phrase names is settled, and it is also where quantity is settled, which is why one slot holds both articles and quantifying words and why the two rarely stack. Its position is fixed at the front of the phrase, unlike the modifying role, which can stand on either side of the head.

The level it operates at

function.level

A function is a role something plays. This is the size of the thing whose structure supplies the role.

Everything joined to this object

One group per typed edge, in both directions. A1b guarantees no object node is an orphan, so this is the whole navigation: an object with no edges would have failed the build rather than reached this page.

What this object is a kind of

Walking this object's own `is-a` edges: what it is a kind of. Several branches from one object are several classification axes, not competing supertypes.

Siblings are listed by name, then by id to break ties. That is a display choice made here and not an order the graph asserts.

Fan-out per dimension

A4

One row per dimension, largest first. That is a display order, not a verdict: 03-schema.md declares no threshold above which fan-out is too much, so this reports the count and grades nothing.

What kinds of this object there are

Walking the `is-a` edges that point at this object: what kinds of it there are. An object reachable two ways is drawn in both places and is still one object.

    • conditionThe role is filled by a member of the determiner class, or by nothing. An empty slot is itself a choice rather than an absence of one, since a phrase built on a bare plural or on a mass noun is read differently from the same phrase with a determiner in front of it.
    • conditionThere is determination only of a nominal head, so the role presupposes a head to determine and cannot stand in a phrase built on any other kind of head.
